Big hotel discounts

On a recent trip, I made heavy use of hotel points accumulated from credit card sign-ups and manufactured spending. But in the smaller towns, chain hotel pickings are slim. So it pays to find coupons for hotels, which can be the biggest travel expense. Best promos right now include:

• Cheaptickets 20% off (code: TAKE20) - When you book a hotel, the agency can take up to a fee of 25%.  So a 20% coupon is practically as good as it gets.  Cheaptickets is a subsidiary of Orbitz, which has good hotel inventory but not as good as Expedia or Priceline/Booking.com.
• Expedia $25 off $100 or $50 off $200 (code: MOBILE25) - Expedia has been promoting its mobile app, which is quite good. Expedia will give you a discount for your first booking using its mobile app, currently $25 off $100. There used to be several $50 off $200 coupons floating around (MOBILECHEER and MOBILEPLAY50), so keep an eye out for future coupons.  These coupons are good for cases where Expedia has a wider selection or lower price than Cheaptickets/Orbitz.

Hotel savings at Hotels.com and Orbitz

Hotels.com offers 10% off your hotel stay of at least $150 with code HTL2013.  This is a great coupon because it lasts until the end of the year and because this coupon doesn't come with as many restrictions as prior coupons that exclude 80% of the hotels you wanted to stay at anyway.

Orbitz.com offers 15% off for stays before April 15, 2013 as long as you book in the next week using code PREZ15.  Look for the "I have a promotion code" box when you enter the dates of your travel.  This coupon has some restrictions, so you'll need to look for the "Promo code eligible" rates in green to see your discount.

Just in time for the holidays, Orbitz offers 15% off your hotel booking by entering code HOLIDAY15. This is a great discount as hotel coupons have become harder to find recently. The promo code box can be hard to find on Orbitz, but instructions are here. Book through your favorite cashback portal and get another 5% off for a total of 20% off your stay.

Big hotel savings via Orbitz

(expires August 13) Orbitz offers 20% off some hotel bookings using coupon code XLMBAM for bookings by August 13 for travel through September 10. This discount is combinable with current sales and can offer some pretty monster savings based on a few searches I've done for upcoming travel. One issue that you might encounter is entering the code (they hide the field quite well). Look for "Redeem promotion code" at the bottom of the left-hand column after you search for a hotel.
