Most car rental companies offer membership programs, which let you rent cars more easily and also offer some discounts. These typically come with an annual and/or application fee, but if you know where to look, you can join for free.
Hertz
Hertz #1 Gold Club is a pretty good program. Unlike the free Hertz #1 Club (i.e. not Gold), you bypass the rental counter and go straight to your car. To get a free membership, click on this sign-up page, use company name "Car & Driver" (magazine), enter CDP number 1757580 (or another one if you have one), and pin code "bapgold".
National
National's Emerald Club also lets you bypass the counter, but it comes with another benefit: you can choose your car from a row of available cars. For a limited time, you can join without paying the $50 membership fee by signing up here.
Avis
an American Express Platinum card, you can get promoted to Avis
