Windows Vista was a poor failure, but at least Windows 7 is supposed to be a big improvement. Microsoft has announced pricing for Windows 7, which will be a minimum of $120. However, if you pre-order now, you can get a steep discount (up to a pre-determined quantity of pre-orders).
