Comcast has historically offered Internet service only if you subscribed to their TV offerings, usually starting at $30/month. Now, however, they are offering naked Internet -- i.e. no other subscription required -- in many areas to new customers for just $20/month for 12 months (no contract required). While the advertised offer is good for new customers, current customers have reported success getting their prices lowered.
This was advertised in the San Jose Mercury News, but is not limited to the Bay Area. Compare this with AT&T, which has its lowest offering for $25/month (and you need a phone line, which costs at least $12/month). To get the offer, you can call Comcast directly (1-800-COMCAST). Follow the offer on this Fatwallet thread.
To avoid a $3/month rental charge for a cable modem, consider buying a super fast Linksys cable modem for $60 new or $20 refurbished.
