Citi Forward: 5% back at restaurants and Amazon.com

Citiforward Citibank is offering a new credit card called Citi Forward.  The main reason to get this credit card is that you can earn 5 points per dollar spent at restaurants, bookstores, music, and movies.  Thank you points are worth about $0.01 each, if you use them for $100 gift cards at many retailers (Gap, Pottery Barn, Home Depot, Staples).  You used to have to be a student to be eligible for the predecessor of this card called the MTVu, so this is a pretty good deal.  Amazon.com counts as a bookstore, so you can go nuts with this card
and get 5% off virtually anything except gift certificates.  This is better than Amazon's own card, which gives you 3% back on Amazon purchases.  If you already have a Citi card, you can call to convert your existing Citi card to a Citi Forward card.
The only downside is that Citi is Citi, so in an effort to make a profit for you the tax payer, they have been devaluing points in the Thank you program (getting rid of the best travel redemptions and Amazon gift cards).  However, you can get 11,000 points by signing up:
  • 5,000 points after signing up for paperless statements
  • 6,000 points after spending $50 on the card within the first 3 months
