Get 150,000 Membership Rewards points from Amex

(offer expired -- that was fast)

The point addict world is abuzz with this offer from American Express that gives you 100,000 Membership Rewards points for signing up for an American Express Platinum card after $3,000 in spending and 50,000 Membership Rewards points for signing up for a Gold Amex after $1,000 in spending.  The Platinum card comes with a whopping $450 annual fee, but it can be very worth it if used strategically.  For example, the Platinum card comes with $200 in airline credits against certain fees (for a single airline of your choice) every calendar year, so you can for example buy $200 worth of American Airlines gift cards this year and next year before the annual fee comes up again.  This makes the effective annual fee $50 for 100,000 points (currently transferrable to 130,000 British Airways Avois points!).

  • Go to creditcards.com

  • The first option on the left menu says “Offers Matched for You.” Click it.

  • Enter all your info and submit (No need to enter your SSN until you reach Amex's website.  In fact, entering in dummy info takes you to the Amex application page.)

Here is Gary Leff's analysis of the Platinum card.
