Empty hotel rooms mean some steep discounts.  Even at luxury properties like Fairmont Hotels, a luxury chain that has many hotels in the U.S. and Canada and a few properties elsewhere (like Zanzibar).  Fairmont is having a friends and family promotion, open to everyone.  To get this deal, you go to Fairmont's website, choose a hotel and dates, click the little triangle (or go to advanced search) so that you can see the Promotional Code field, then type in NFAF into that field.  This promotion is legitimate, so you won't need to worry about your reservation being canceled.  And these rates aren't the prepaid/non-refundable variety that you usually see for these rock-bottom prices.
