Buying cash equivalents with a credit card

Gw(update: the party might be coming to an end)

There are two current offers that I know of for buying cash equivalents with a credit card.  These are not as good deals as when you used to be able to buy $30,000 of high-yielding savings bonds or $2,000 in travelers cheques with a credit card, but it's a similar concept.

  1. US Mint $1 coins: You can buy $25,000 (9/09 update: native American coins are gone, so you can only do ~$4,000 of coin business) worth of $1 coins, which will be shipped to your door for free. You are limited to 2 boxes per president (each box has 250 coins), and there are currently 2 presidents available (Jackson and Adams).  In addition, you can buy 99 boxes of the Native American $1 coins.
  2. Money orders at grocery stores: Some grocery stores will allow you to pay for a money order with a credit card, especially if you add onto an existing purchase.  While some stores might not allow it, you could ask nicely and see if you can pick up a few hundred miles/points on every visit to the store.
