Probably the reason your laptop is slower than you'd like is because you don't have enough memory. For $13, you can buy (from Buy.com) 1GB memory modules that you can put into most recently manufactured laptops and most Apple laptops (and Apple desktops) after a $20 rebate. Shipping is free, but you must pay sales tax in California.
Use this tool to see if your computer can use this memory (PC2-5300, 667Mhz 200-pin SO-DIMM DDR2) or you can also look at your manufacturer's website.
